Born as Abhay Charan De on September 1st in Calcutta, India. From his childhood, Abhay was deeply spiritual, raised in a devotional family that nurtured his love for the Lord.

1901Childhood Ratha Yatra

At just five years old, Abhay conducted his first Ratha Yatra festival in his neighborhood. Supported by his father, he built a small wooden cart and led local children in chanting and sharing prasadam.

1922The Sacred Order

Meeting his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, who instructed him to dedicate his life to sharing the timeless wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita and Vedic knowledge in the English language.

1944Back to Godhead

During the turmoil of World War II, he launched the "Back to Godhead" magazine single-handedly. He wrote, edited, funded, and hand-distributed the copies on the streets of Delhi and Calcutta.

Renouncing family life, Abhay accepted Sannyasa (the renounced order) in Vrindavan. Living in simple rooms at the historic Radha Damodara temple, he began translating and writing commentaries on the Srimad Bhagavatam.

1965The Jaladuta Journey

At age 69, with only 40 rupees and a trunk of translated books, he boarded the cargo ship Jaladuta bound for Boston. Surviving two heart attacks at sea, he arrived with a mission to bring Bhakti to the West.
